Interstate removalists checklist for Sydney households leaving NSW
An interstate move from Sydney means paperwork on both sides of the border: clean garden gear and biosecurity declarations before you go, a written contract and your own insurance for the trip, and new rego, licence and enrolment once you land.
Moving out of NSW is less one big day than a run of deadlines. Some fall before the truck is loaded, some at the border, and some well after you've unpacked. Take Queensland as the example destination. A car garaged there must be registered within 14 days. Your licence must be transferred to a Queensland licence within 3 months. You can update your enrolment once you have lived at the new address for at least one month.
Count from the day you arrive and those land at about day 14, day 30 and day 90, though day 30 is when you can first update your enrolment rather than a deadline. That's our estimate, treating a month as 30 days. The point is that the first one falls inside your first fortnight, while the boxes are still stacked in the hall.
Here is St Ives Removals' checklist for the whole move, in the order each step comes due.
The deadlines on an interstate move, in order
Before the move, the paperwork comes first. Don't let goods be packed before the correct paperwork is received and signed. If you're heading to Tasmania, the personal-effects declaration must be lodged before the goods arrive, and a dog must be treated with a Praziquantel wormer within 14 days before entry.
After the move, the car and the paperwork take over. Queensland's rego and licence clocks are above. Back in NSW, you must cancel before the registration expiry date to get a refund.
Each state sets its own rules. If you're not going to Queensland, check your new state's transport authority before you count on these numbers.
What interstate removalists won't carry, and what to clean first
Every state guards its borders differently. Pests, diseases and weeds can spread on plants, soil, animal products and equipment, and travellers can face on-the-spot fines.
That's why most removalists can't move plants, soil or food. Garden tools, bikes and outdoor furniture should be cleaned of soil before collection.
The industry's ineligible list is short: prohibited dangerous goods, plants, animals and unclean items. A plant may need a certificate. Collections and special-interest items depend on company policy, so ask early.
Two items catch people out:
- The BBQ gas bottle. It won't be carried without a certificate from a Gas Cylinder Test Station certified by Standards Australia stating it has been purged. Never burn off or vent the gas.
- The mower. Lawnmowers and garden equipment need the petrol drained, and steam cleaning if they're going interstate.
Don't pack ammunition or aerosols either.
Our view: start in the garden shed and the pantry, not the linen cupboard. They take the longest to clear, and they're where the rules bite.
WA and Tasmania: the declarations to lodge
| Western Australia | Tasmania | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Declaration for movement of personal goods into WA WA DPIRD | Personal-effects declaration Biosecurity Tasmania |
| Who lodges | Completed with your removals company, which can lodge it with the container details WA DPIRD | Separate forms for a removalist move and a self-move Biosecurity Tasmania |
| When | Not stated | Lodged before goods arrive Biosecurity Tasmania |
| Cleaning rule | Shoes and outdoor items cleaned of soil WA DPIRD | Items washed free of soil, seeds, plant material and food Biosecurity Tasmania |
| Inspection and costs | Garden equipment may be inspected; delays possible; inspection fees and charges may apply WA DPIRD | Anything not clean needs treatment at owner's expense Biosecurity Tasmania |
| Items refused or seized | Flower or foliage arrangements may be seized and destroyed if not readily identifiable or a pest or disease host WA DPIRD | Used apiary equipment not permitted Biosecurity Tasmania |
| Pets and special items | Not stated | Dogs treated with Praziquantel within 14 days before entry and declared on arrival Biosecurity Tasmania |
| Check before you go | Conditions change with pest and disease outbreaks WA DPIRD | Not stated |
Western Australia. When moving personal effects in, you complete the Declaration for movement of personal goods into WA with your removals company. Ask the removalist for the freight container details and ask them to lodge it for you. Expect some delays from quarantine procedures, and inspection fees and charges may apply.
Mowers, whipper snippers and blower vacuums may be inspected for plant material and insects. Shoes, boots and anything used outdoors should be cleaned of soil. Flower or foliage arrangements may be seized and destroyed if they aren't readily identifiable or are a pest or disease host. Entry conditions can change with pest and disease outbreaks, so check again in the week you go.
Tasmania. The declaration comes first, and there are separate forms for a removalist move and a self-move. Mowers, garden tools, pots, clothing, footwear, fridges and freezers are allowed only if washed free of soil, seeds, plant material and food. Anything that isn't clean needs treatment at owner's expense.
Beekeepers, take note: used apiary equipment is not permitted entry because of the Varroa mite response in NSW. Dogs must be wormed within the 14-day window and declared on arrival.
How long removalists interstate take from Sydney
Transit time depends on distance, transport method (mostly road, some rail), load size, timing and weather. As a guide, Sydney to Canberra can take a day or two, and Sydney to Perth a week or more.
Timing matters because Christmas and school holidays can slow things. Muval data puts November to February as Australia's peak moving season, with advice to book at least four to six weeks in advance. NSW summer school holidays run 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027.
The law allows for this. Where no time is set, removalist services must be provided within a reasonable time, and what's reasonable depends on busy periods and public holidays. If the run is long, plan to live out of your car and a borrowed mattress for a week, and book any new-home deliveries for after the truck lands.

Get a written, itemised quote. Then read the contract. It should include a household inventory, pick-up and delivery addresses, dates and times, how payment is made, and any extra storage costs if there are delays.
That last item matters more on an interstate run than a local one. A week on the road leaves more room for a delivery date to slip.
Your Australian Consumer Law rights travel with you. The service must be provided with due care and skill and be fit for purpose. For what a full plan looks like on paper, see our guide to what a written move plan contains.
Who insures your goods on the way
Removalists are not required by law to insure your property, and most only insure their vehicle, so never assume their cover is yours.
AFRA members must hold public liability, third-party property, motor vehicle and carrier's legal liability insurance. AFRA-accredited removalists can provide transit insurance, and storage cover is a separate premium.
Here's the test. A removalist should be able to give you a Product Disclosure Statement and Financial Services Guide before selling transit insurance. If they can't, they may not be qualified to sell it.
Who packed the box also matters. Breakages in cartons you packed yourself may not be accepted by the removalist as a claim. Our guide to packing fragile and valuable items covers who packs, who carries and who covers.
What rides in your car, not on the truck
Keep jewellery, passports and valuable documents with you. Put your first-night essentials in a box in your car.
On a run like Sydney to Perth, a week or more, "first night" stretches. Pack that box for several nights. Add the folder with your contract, the inventory and any WA or Tasmanian declaration, because you may need them at the other end before the truck arrives.
After you arrive: rego, licence and the electoral roll

Other states: check your new state's transport authority.

Electoral roll
In Queensland you have 14 days to register a vehicle garaged there, and may be fined if you don't. The licence follows within 3 months. Elsewhere, check your new state's transport authority for its own deadlines.
Registering in Queensland does not cancel your NSW registration: to cancel it and get a refund, you must contact the interstate authority where your vehicle was previously registered, which here means NSW.
The order is: register in your new state, then cancel NSW registration for a refund of the remaining period. Send the completed refund request, your NSW plates or a surrender receipt, copies of your proof of identity and a copy of the interstate registration certificate. An admin fee applies.
Then the roll. After a month at the new address, update your enrolment using a driver licence, passport, Medicare or citizenship number. Pop a reminder in your phone on moving day so it doesn't drift.

Your next step
Start with the garden shed, the pantry and the car's rego papers, because they take the longest. For an interstate move, St Ives Removals plans the St Ives end and arranges the long haul with others. When you're ready to talk dates and addresses, send them through our removalist quote request and mention that the move is interstate. Bring this checklist to that conversation. Every question in it is one worth putting to any removalist, us included.
